From Vintage to Vogue: A Glass Door Hutch Top Gets a Fresh New Look
A Modern Makeover for a Classic Hutch Top
There’s something deeply satisfying about turning a forgotten vintage piece into a functional beauty. This glass door hutch top had great bones but needed a little love—and a lot of creativity—to shine again.
Step 1: Deep Cleaning & Prep
The transformation began with a thorough cleaning inside and out using TSP Alternative. This step is essential for removing grime and ensuring the paint adheres properly.
Once clean, I sanded the top surface to prep it for staining. The goal was to create a smooth canvas that would absorb the finish evenly and highlight the wood’s natural charm.
Step 2: Painting the Interior & Exterior
For the interior, I chose Fusion Mineral Paint in Limestone—Designed to mimic the natural complexity of limestone, this smooth shade is
beautiful on its own or as a backdrop for accents of blue and green.
The exterior got a coat of Bellwood, A timeless green with a lush feel. This versatile sage-inspired shade works beautifully with both classic and modern decor. A perfectly soft and sophisticated sage green,
Step 3: Adding Decorative Details
To elevate the design, I added a WoodUbend pediment to the top front and trimmed each front side edge with trim. These mouldings were painted in Bellwood to blend seamlessly with the rest of the piece, adding subtle architectural interest.
Step 4: Creating a Beachy Top Finish
While the paint dried, I turned my attention to the top. First, I painted it in Limestone, then applied Cappuccino Stain & Finishing Oil. Wiping it back gave the surface a soft, beach‑washed look—perfect for coastal or cottage‑inspired decor.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
To complete the makeover, I installed two modern gold knobs. Their sleek finish added just the right amount of glam and contrast to the muted tones of the paint.
The Final Result
This once‑dated hutch top is now a stunning dining room display cabinet that blends vintage charm with modern style. It’s proof that with a little vision and the right materials, any piece can be transformed into something beautiful and functional.
