From Tired to Timeless: A Small Wooden Table Gets a Beautiful Makeover

Some pieces arrive in the shop with so much potential that you can almost see their next chapter waiting beneath the surface. This small wooden table was one of them—solid, heavy, and beautifully made, but showing its age. All it needed was a little love and a fresh perspective.

Step 1: Sanding Down to a Clean Slate

To revive the top, I sanded it down starting with 80 grit, then gradually worked through 100, 180, and finally 220 grit. This progression removes old finishes while creating a smooth, even surface that’s ready to accept new paint and topcoats.

Step 2: A Deep Clean for a Fresh Start

Once the sanding was complete, the entire piece got a thorough cleaning with TSP Alternative. This step is essential for removing dust, oils, and residue so the paint can properly adhere.

Step 3: A Soft, Warm Paint Wash

For the tabletop, I applied a paint wash using Fusion Mineral Paint in Algonquin. This warm, earthy tone adds depth and character while allowing the natural wood grain to peek through.

Step 4: A Lush Sage Green Transformation

For the base, I chose Fusion Mineral Paint in Bellwood—a timeless, soft sage green that feels both classic and modern. It’s a beautifully versatile shade that pairs perfectly with the Algonquin wash, creating a calm, sophisticated look that suits almost any space.

Step 5: Durable Protection for Everyday Use

Since this table is destined to be an entryway piece, durability matters. I applied two coats of Fusion’s Ultra Guard in Flat to protect the finish while keeping that soft, matte look.

Step 6: Hardware With a Touch of Gold

The original hardware had great shape, so instead of replacing it, I cleaned it thoroughly and refreshed it with Lemon Gold Posh Chalk Pigments. The bright gold tone adds just the right amount of elegance without overpowering the piece.

The Final Result

What started as a tired little table is now a fresh, stylish, and functional piece ready for many more years of use. With a blend of thoughtful prep, quality products, and a vision for what it could be, this makeover shows just how rewarding upcycling can be.
