From Scratched to Stunning: How I Transformed a Half Moon Table with Night Swim Milk Paint

Some pieces just have good bones. The moment I spotted this little half moon table, I knew it had serious potential hiding under a scratched, bubbling top and years of neglect. The design was too good to give up on — so I gave it a second life, and honestly? It came out even better than I imagined.

Here's exactly how I did it.

The Starting Point

The tabletop was in rough shape — surface scratches throughout and areas where the finish had started to bubble and lift. The base was still solid, and the legs had the most gorgeous detail work, but that top needed serious attention before any paint touched it.

Step 1: Clean Everything with TSP Alternative

Before anything else, I gave the whole table a thorough wash down with TSP Alternative. This step is non-negotiable — dust, grease, and years of built-up grime will absolutely wreck your paint adhesion if you skip it. A clean surface is the foundation of a great finish.

Step 2: Sand Out the Bubbling

Once clean and dry, I sanded the top by hand to knock down all the bubbled and raised areas and get back to a smooth, even surface. Usually, the bubbling is from wetness on the top going through to the substrate under the veneer.  

Step 3: Seal with BIN Shellac Primer

Here's the trick to making sure those repaired areas stay smooth and don't bleed through your paint: BIN Shellac-Based Primer in a spray can. I sprayed a light, even coat over the entire tabletop. Shellac seals in stains, tannins, and any remaining imperfections, and it creates the perfect base for paint to grip onto. This is one of my favorite professional prep secrets.

Step 4: Mix Up the Night Swim Milk Paint

Once the BIN was dry, it was time for color — and I chose Night Swim Milk Paint by Fusion. It's a deep, moody, sophisticated shade and it looked absolutely made for this table.

Because the remaining finish on the base had a bit of sheen to it, I added Ultra Grip Bonding Agent directly into my Milk Paint mix to guarantee adhesion. Here's the exact ratio I used:

• ¼ cup water

• ¼ cup Night Swim Milk Paint

• ¼ cup Ultra Grip

I combined everything in a cup, mixed it thoroughly with a mixing whisk, and let it rest for a few minutes — this lets the Milk Paint fully hydrate and the Ultra Grip activate.

Step 5: Apply with a Natural Bristle Brush

Using a natural bristle brush, I applied the first coat in long, even strokes. Milk Paint typically cures in about 30 minutes, but with Ultra Grip blended in, it needs more time — so I covered the cup with a piece of plastic wrap to keep the mixture fresh overnight.

The next day, I came back, gave it a good look, and applied a second coat. Then I let it cure for a full 24 hours before touching it again. 

Step 6: Wet Sand + Hemp Oil Finish

This is the step that took it from nice to wow.

Once fully cured, I applied Fusion Mineral Paint Hemp Oil to the entire table. On the flat tabletop, I wet sanded with a fine sanding pad while the Hemp Oil was still on the surface — this fills in the micro-texture of the paint and creates the most incredibly smooth, buttery finish. Think: velvet you can touch.

For the detailed legs with all their beautiful crevices, I applied the Hemp Oil with a shop towel, working it into every groove and ridge. Hemp Oil is incredible on Milk Painted furniture pieces because it nourishes the finish and brings out the depth of the paint color without making it look plastic or over-finished.

The Result

The tabletop is glass smooth. The whole table has a rich, deep sheen that perfectly suits the Night Swim color — dark, moody, and sophisticated. The detail work on the legs looks stunning, and the whole piece has this quality, heirloom feel that I couldn't have imagined when I first brought it home.

This is exactly why I never write off a piece just because it's rough around the edges. With the right products and a little patience, the transformation can be breathtaking.
