From Forgotten to Fabulous: An Antique Trunk Makeover

Breathing New Life Into a Time‑Worn Treasure
There’s something magical about taking an old, neglected piece and giving it a second chance. Upcycling this antique trunk wasn’t just a project—it was a creative adventure that reminded me why I love what I do.
When I first found it, the trunk had definitely seen better days. The interior paper lining was peeling, the metal was dull, and several hardware pieces were missing. But underneath all that wear, I could see its potential.

Prepping the Inside
I started by removing as much of the old paper lining as possible. Once the loose pieces were gone, I gave the interior a light sanding to smooth everything out. My original plan was to paint the inside, so I wanted a clean, even surface to work with.
Cleaning & Prepping the Exterior
Next came a good scrub with TSP Alternative to remove years of grime. Once it was clean and dry, I brushed Ultra Grip Bonding Agent onto the metal areas to ensure the paint would adhere beautifully.

Painting the Trunk
For the main color, I chose Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black—a timeless, dramatic shade that instantly elevates any piece. After two coats, the trunk already looked transformed.
To highlight the raised floral details in the metalwork, I dry‑brushed Highlander over the surface. This subtle contrast added depth and brought those beautiful designs back to life.
Replacing Missing Hardware
The trunk was missing its side handles and the front latch section, so I went hunting for replacements. I found gorgeous wrought iron handles for the sides and a half‑moon pull that fit the lid perfectly. They added just the right amount of rustic charm.
Adding Gold Accents
Once the hardware was installed, I mixed up some Posh Chalk Gold Pigments and used them to highlight the decorative metal pieces. The gold against the Coal Black paint created a stunning, vintage‑meets‑luxury look.
Where the original latch had been torn off, there was an unsightly hole. To disguise it, I added a WoodUbend moulding and painted it with the same gold pigments. It blended seamlessly and looked like it had always belonged there.
A Change of Heart for the Interior
Just when I thought I was ready to paint the inside, inspiration struck. I remembered a stack of vintage magazine clippings I had saved, and suddenly the idea of decoupage felt perfect.
I carefully arranged and adhered the images inside the trunk, creating a nostalgic collage that feels both personal and timeless. It turned the interior into a delightful surprise—something you don’t expect until you lift the lid.

The Final Result
What started as a battered old trunk is now a functional, eye‑catching piece full of character and charm. It’s the kind of item that sparks conversation, adds personality to a room, and will be admired for years to come.
Upcycling isn’t just about making something pretty—it’s about preserving history, embracing creativity, and giving forgotten pieces a new story. This trunk now has one worth telling.
