🖤 Dramatic Elegance: Antique Table Upcycle with Decoupage & Coal Black

An Antique Table with a Bold New Look

Some pieces inspire creativity the moment you see them. This set of antique tables had such beautiful lines that I knew they deserved a makeover with a touch of drama and elegance. I started with the one on the right with the top intact.

Step 1: Preparing the Surface

I began by giving it a thorough cleaning with TSP Alternative, removing years of dirt and grime to create a fresh canvas.

Step 2: Creating a Striking Centerpiece

To make the decoupage paper stand out, I painted the middle section of the tabletop in white. Once dry, I applied a gorgeous, dramatic decoupage paper featuring an elegant woman. The design instantly elevated the table, turning it into a true conversation piece.

Step 3: Painting with Coal Black

To carry on the dramatic theme, I painted the rest of the table in Fusion Mineral Paint Coal Black. The deep, rich color framed the decoupage beautifully, adding sophistication and contrast. On the top, I started to stipple the brush like you would in stenciling and this creates a little texture to help blend in around the edges of the decoupage paper. I did this around the border edge to keep the decorative inlay design.

Step 4: Adding WoodUbend Embellishments

I decided to add some WoodUbend pieces to the curved top areas and the bottom to tie it all in.  Then I dry brushed with Posh Chalk Pigments in Lemon Gold to highlight the beading on the outside edge, the embellishments and the hardware.

The Final Reveal

The finished table was everything I hoped for — bold, elegant, and full of character. It didn’t last long in the shop, proving that a well‑executed upcycle can turn a forgotten piece into a show‑stopping treasure.

Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to mix bold paint colors with striking decoupage designs. The right combination can transform antique furniture into modern art that customers (or guests) will fall in love with.
