An Old Trunk Gets Upcycled With Fusion Mineral Paint and a Decor Transfer

Some makeovers feel like magic—and this old trunk was one of them. When I first brought it home, it was dusty and dirty, but thankfully free of that musty smell that often lingers in vintage trunks. That gave me the perfect blank canvas to work with.

Step 1: Deep Clean I started by giving the trunk a thorough cleaning inside and out using TSP Alternative. It’s my go-to for prepping surfaces without harsh chemicals.

Step 2: Sand & Stain The wooden strips needed a little love, so I gave them a light sanding to smooth out imperfections. Then I applied Cappuccino Stain & Finishing Oil, which brought out the wood’s rich tones and added a subtle sheen.

Step 3: Paint & Embellish Next came the transformation. I painted the exterior in Fusion Mineral Paint’s Coal Black—a timeless, dramatic shade that pairs beautifully with florals. To elevate the look, I added a floral decor transfer and some WoodUbend mouldings to the top and front. These decorative touches added instant charm and character.

Step 4: Metallic Accents To make the metal hardware and WoodUbend pieces pop, I dry brushed them with gold pigments. It added just the right amount of shimmer and sophistication.

Step 5: Added Handles  The original leather handles were missing when I got the trunk so I decided to add these sturdy half moon handles.

Step 6: Interior Glow-Up The inside deserved just as much attention. I lined it with a gorgeous floral wallpaper, turning the trunk into a true showstopper—beautiful inside and out.

This project was a joy to complete and a great reminder that even the dustiest finds can become treasures with a little creativity and care. If you’re inspired to try your own trunk makeover, I’d love to hear about it!
