A Pine Shelf That Needed a Little Sunshine

When I first found this simple pine shelf, it was painted black and looking a little worse for wear. The finish was dull, the surface was banged up, and it had clearly lived a long life. But underneath all that, I saw something completely different — a bright, happy display shelf just waiting to hold some beautiful plants.
Before any paint could touch it, I gave the whole piece a thorough cleaning with TSP Alternative to remove the dust, grime, and buildup that had settled into the wood over time. A clean surface is the best foundation for a smooth, lasting finish.
Then, I tightened up the sides with some
Choosing the Perfect Cheerful Yellow
I had a few leftover pieces of butterfly décor transfers that I’d been wanting to use, and this shelf felt like the perfect match. To complement the butterflies, I reached for Fusion’s Alchemy line in the shade Harvest — a warm, antique yellow that instantly brings a sense of sunshine and charm.
Two coats were all it took to completely transform the shelf from dark and tired to bright and inviting.
Adding the Butterflies
Once the paint was fully dry, I placed the butterfly transfers on each end of the shelf. These little details added just the right amount of whimsy and movement, making the piece feel alive and full of personality.
To protect everything and give the finish a soft, buttery sheen, I sealed the entire shelf with Fusion Mineral Paint Clear Wax. It brought out the richness of the yellow and gave the butterflies a beautifully blended look.

A Perfect Home for Plants
Now that it’s finished, I can picture this shelf sitting in a sunny window, overflowing with trailing greenery, succulents, or even a few seasonal blooms. The warm yellow and delicate butterflies make it feel like a little slice of summer all year long.
Sometimes the simplest pieces turn into the most joyful makeovers — and this one definitely did.
