🌸 Bold & Beautiful: My Favorite Antique Cabinet Upcycle

My Favorite Upcycle of All Time

Every once in a while, a project comes along that feels extra special — the kind that makes you step back and say, “Wow, this is why I love upcycling.” For me, that project was an antique cabinet with glass doors that had been sitting in my shop for ages, quietly holding antique dishes and collectibles.

One day, I looked at it differently. Instead of seeing the scars and damaged veneer, I saw potential. I wanted to give it a bold new personality while honoring its vintage charm.

Step 1: Removing the Old Veneer

The inside back of the cabinet had cracked and broken veneer that needed to go. Once I carefully removed it, I had a clean surface ready for something fresh and exciting.

I used wood filler to fill in the chipped veneer on the outside of the cabinet, the doors were especially bad. Worn with years of use.

Step 2: Adding a Pop of Pattern

I had the perfect wallpaper waiting — a dramatic black background covered in brightly colored flowers. Using Mod Podge, I adhered the wallpaper to the back panel, instantly transforming the cabinet interior into a vibrant focal point.

Step 3: Painting the Shelves

To complement the wallpaper, I painted the interior and shelves in Fusion Mineral Paint Coal Black. For durability and shine, I finished them with Tough Coat Gloss, giving the interior a sleek, polished look.

Step 4: Going Bold on the Exterior

For the outside, I wanted something fearless. I chose Fusion Mineral Paint Park Bench, a bright, bold green that brought the bookcase to life. Once the paint dried, I applied Ebony Stain & Finishing Oil as a wipe‑on glaze. This added depth, tying the green and black together beautifully.

The Final Reveal

The result? A one‑of‑a‑kind statement piece that blends vintage character with modern flair. The bold wallpaper, rich black shelves, and striking green exterior created a show‑stopping upcycle that remains my favorite project to date.

Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to go bold with your furniture makeovers. Sometimes the most daring choices — like bright green paint or floral wallpaper — are the ones that make a piece unforgettable.
